Yuichi Uchino, MD, PhD

Dr. Yuichi Uchino, graduated from Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan in 2001. Afterward he had started as an ophthalmology residency at Keio University Hospital. After finishing residency, he worked as cornea fellowship at Tokyo Dental College Ichikawa General Hospital (TDC) and at Keio University Hospital. TDC is the facility where most have corneal disease cases, and the fellowship at here was very meaningful experience for him who was aspiring to becoming an ophthalmic surgeon. For five years as resident and fellow, he took a training of diagnosis and treatment of general ophthalmology, intraocular operations such as cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, and finally obtained the board certification in Japanese ophthalmological society at 2006. Back to Keio University Hospital, he took in charge of difficult corneal disease cases, and also took place in training fellows and residents. Furthermore, he was engaged in the clinical research about corneal transplantation including PKP, DALK and DSAEK in Keio University Hospital, and was interested in the basic research about the mechanism of lacrimal gland dysfunction by mitochondrial reactive oxygen species at Tokai University School of Medicine and obtained PhD from Keio University School of Medicine. Returned to Keio University Hospital at 2011 as an instructor, he had researched on basic research of secreted mucin in human tear and membrane-associated mucin of human ocular surface. Afterwards he worked as postdoctoral fellow in Schepens Eye Research Institute, researched about the relationship between the disruption of the ocular surface barrier and the occurrence of inflammation. From 2016, he has been an assistant professor in Department of Ophthalmology, Keio University School of Medicine. Dr. Uchino’s primary research interests are the etiology of dry eye disease and the mechanism of glycocalyx barrier function on ocular surface.
